Discover Hong Kong’s Unique Natural Landscapes

Here are some popular outing hotspots in the New Territories and Hong Kong Island for nature lovers and travelers who are keen on photography. Check out the signature locations for enjoyment of magnificent scenes and for a more exciting journey in Hong Kong.


High Island, Sai Kung

Hong Kong Geopark featuring spectacular landforms and rock formations formed by volcanic activities over 100 million years ago and shaped by waves and weathering. If viewing the Geopark’s remarkable geological heritage from High Island, you could see the hexagonal volcanic columns along the coast closely. Other geological features such as twisted columns and dyke intrusions can also be in sight.

Location: High Island, Sai Kung, New Territories

How to get there:

  • Take bus 94 from Sai Kung town centre or bus 96R from MTR Diamond Hill Station. Get off after Pak Tam Chung and walk along Tai Mong Tsai Road to the junction ahead. Turn right on Man Yee Road and walk about 9 km


Kat O, Northeast of the New Territories

Located at an island west of Mirs Bay and east of Sha Tau Kok, Kat O is named as Crooked Island as being inspired by its shape. Walking through the Kat O Nature Trail (1 kilometer) let you experience the natural scenery of the area. Kat O is truly a gem of the northeast area which owns cultural heritage and stunning landscape.

Location: West of Mirs Bay & East of Sha Tau Kok

How to get there:

  • Take ferry from Ma Liu Shui that operates between Ma Liu Shui to Kat O and Ap Chau; or
  • Travel by MTR East Rail and get off at the University Station, then walk for about 15 minutes to Ma Liu Shui Landing Steps No.3 for the ferry service to Kat O and Ap Chau. The normal traveling time is about 2 hours


Dragon’s Back, Southeast of Hong Kong Island

Located at a hill in southern Hong Kong at Shek O Country Park, the trail “Dragon’s Back” is well-known as the best hikes in Hong Kong by《Lonely Planet》and the most admired by hiking lovers & photographers by CNN travel.com. The stunning views of Shek O, Big Wave Bay, Tung Lung Island and Stanley Peninsula through the  trail must impress you a lot.

Location: Southeast District of Hong Kong Island

How to get there:

  • Take bus 9 or minibus near MTR Shau Kei Wan station (exit A) towards Shek O to the Tei Wan stop on Shek O Road
